In This Guide
Choosing a strap-on dildo starts with one non-negotiable requirement: it must work with your harness. Everything else — size, shape, material, vibration — is preference. This guide covers both.
Harness compatibility — start here
To work with a standard O-ring harness, a dildo needs a flared base — a wide, flat flange at the bottom that is wider than the harness O-ring. The flange is what keeps the dildo from slipping through during use.
Check the product listing for the terms 'harness compatible,' 'O-ring compatible,' or 'strap-on compatible.' The base diameter and neck diameter should be listed — compare these to your harness O-ring size.
Many dildos — including realistic-looking ones — don't have a suitably flared base. Always confirm compatibility before purchasing separately from your harness. 'Realistic' does not mean 'harness-ready.'
Materials guide
For shared use — where partners take turns wearing the harness — non-porous silicone is essential. Porous materials harbour bacteria even after washing and cannot be fully sterilised between uses.
Size guide
For penetrative vaginal use, a 5–6 in insertable length and 1.25–1.5 in diameter is the most practical range for most receiving partners. For anal use, start smaller: 4–5 in insertable length, 1–1.25 in diameter.
Start smaller than you think. It's far easier to use a smaller dildo well than to make a large one comfortable. You can always go bigger — you can't undo a difficult first experience.
Shape and texture
Realistic / anatomical
Modelled on a penis with a glans, veins, and natural curve. Some people prefer this; others find non-realistic shapes more comfortable or more affirming. The glans shape provides a different internal sensation from a smooth cylinder.
Non-realistic
Smooth cylinder or abstract shape. Often more comfortable for anal use. Easier to clean. No psychological associations with specific anatomy — preferred by many trans and non-binary wearers.
Curved
Curved toward the front wall. Designed to contact the G-spot during vaginal use, or the prostate (P-spot) during anal use. The Tantus Curve is a classic example. Highly recommended if G-spot or prostate stimulation is the goal of the session.
Textured
Ridges, bumps, or ribs on the surface. Adds sensation for the receiving partner. Less common in dedicated strap-on dildos than in vibrators, but available.
Vibrating strap-on dildos
Vibrating strap-on dildos either have a built-in rechargeable motor or a bullet compartment. The vibration is felt by the receiving partner internally — and, if the harness has a vibration pocket, pressed against the wearer's anatomy simultaneously.
The key quality indicator: look for motors described as 'rumbly' rather than 'buzzy.' Deeper vibration transmits better through silicone material and feels more intense internally. A weak surface buzz largely gets absorbed by the dildo body before it reaches either partner.
If you want both partners to feel the vibration, the harness needs a pocket or compartment where a bullet vibrator sits against the wearer. Not all harnesses have this. Check before you buy if mutual stimulation is the goal.

FAQ
Can I use any dildo with my harness?
Only if it has a suitably flared base and the right neck diameter for your O-ring. Always check compatibility before purchasing separately from a harness.
Do I need a specific dildo for anal use?
Any harness-compatible dildo can be used anally. For prostate stimulation specifically, a curved dildo targeting the anterior wall is more effective. A smooth non-realistic shape is typically easiest to start with.
How do I sterilise a silicone dildo for shared use?
If it has no internal motor or battery, 100% silicone dildos can be boiled for 3–5 minutes. Alternatively, wash with soap and water then apply a 10% bleach solution rinse — rinse thoroughly after. Dual-density and TPE dildos cannot be fully sterilised.
What size O-ring do I need?
The dildo's neck — the narrow point just above the flared base — should fit through the O-ring with mild resistance. The base flange must be wider than the O-ring. Most harnesses come with multiple O-ring sizes. Match the ring to the neck width of your dildo.
Does the dildo have to match my harness brand?
No. O-ring compatibility is near-universal — any harness-compatible dildo with the right neck width will work with any O-ring harness. Brand matching is not required.
