In This Guide
Trojan Magnum is the best-known large-size condom in the U.S. and the first product most people think of when they hear large condoms. Introduced in 1989, the Magnum line is 54 mm nominal width at the base with a contoured shape that widens at the head, compared to the 52 mm standard Trojan width. Magnum has since expanded into a family of variants: Magnum standard, Magnum Thin, Magnum Ribbed, Magnum Ecstasy, and Magnum XL. This guide covers the Magnum lineup specifically, compares it to other large-size brands, and helps you decide whether Magnum is the right size at all.
What Magnum Is (and What It Is Not)
Magnum is a fit, not a status symbol. It is 2 mm wider at the base than standard Trojan and has a contoured shape that widens further at the head, giving more room for users with above-average erect width. Magnum is not stronger, not more durable, and not better-protecting than standard Trojan. Wearing Magnum when you do not need it increases the risk of slippage, which is a worse failure mode than a snug standard condom.
Who Actually Needs Magnum
Magnum fits users with an erect circumference of about 110 to 116 mm (4.3 to 4.6 inches). To check whether you need Magnum:
- Measure your erect circumference at the thickest part of your shaft using a flexible tape or string.
- Divide that number by two to get your approximate nominal-width requirement.
- If the result is 54 mm or larger, Magnum standard fits.
- If it is 56 mm or larger, Magnum XL fits.
- If it is under 54 mm, stick with standard condoms.

The Magnum Lineup
Magnum (standard)
54 mm at the base, contoured wider at the head, 205 mm length. Lubricated, premium latex. Trojan Magnum Lubricated 12-pack is the 12-pack reference product.
Magnum Thin
Same Magnum size in noticeably thinner latex (about 0.055 mm). For users who fit Magnum but want better sensation. Many Magnum users switch permanently to Thin once they try it. Available as Trojan Magnum Thin 12-pack and Trojan Magnum Thin 3-pack.
Magnum Ribbed
Magnum size with ribbed texture on the upper shaft. For added stimulation for the receiving partner. Trojan Magnum Ribbed 3-pack is the 3-pack option.
Magnum Ecstasy
Magnum size with ribbed texture outside and UltraSmooth lubricant inside, designed to add sensation for both partners. Trojan Magnum Ecstasy is the 10-pack.
Magnum XL
56 mm at the base, widens further at the head. Roughly 30 percent larger than standard Trojan by volume. The next step up if standard Magnum feels tight. Trojan Magnum XL is the 12-pack.
Magnum Versus Other Large-Fit Brands
Versus LifeStyles SKYN Large
SKYN Large is 56 mm polyisoprene non-latex, comparable to Magnum XL in size. For users who need both large fit and non-latex material, SKYN is the only option (Magnum is latex only). For users without latex sensitivity, Magnum has more variant options (thin, ribbed, ecstasy) than SKYN. See LifeStyles SKYN Large 12-pack.
Versus Durex XXL
Durex XXL is 56 mm, comparable to Magnum XL. Limited retail availability in the U.S. compared to Magnum. Both work for the same size users.
Versus Union The MAX
Union The MAX is 56 mm width and positioned as a lower-cost alternative to Magnum XL. Union The MAX 12-pack is the 12-pack. Quality is fine; brand recognition is lower.
Versus MyONE Custom
MyONE produces 10 widths from 49 to 64 mm. For users larger than Magnum XL fits comfortably, MyONE is the only U.S. brand that goes wider with FDA-approved condoms. For users between Magnum and Magnum XL, MyONE's intermediate widths can fit better than either off-the-shelf option.
Common Magnum Misconceptions
"Magnum is for everyone"
No. Magnum is for users measuring 110+ mm erect circumference. Wearing Magnum below that range increases slip risk.
"Magnum is the same as Magnum XL"
No. Magnum is 54 mm at base; Magnum XL is 56 mm. There is a real difference.
"Magnum is thinner than standard"
No. Standard Magnum is the same latex thickness as standard Trojan ENZ. Magnum Thin is the variant with thinner latex.
"You can tell if you need Magnum just by looking"
No. The variable is width, not length, and width is hard to estimate visually. Use a tape measure.
Lube and Storage for Magnum
Same rules as any latex condom: water-based or silicone-based lube only, oil-based lubes destroy the latex. Store in a cool dry place away from friction. See Condoms & Lube: What's Safe to Use and Do Condoms Expire? Shelf Life & Storage.
What If Magnum Is Still Not Right?
Two failure modes and their fixes:
- Magnum is still too tight: try Magnum XL (56 mm). If still tight, try MyONE Custom in 58 mm or 60 mm.
- Magnum slips during use: you do not need Magnum. Drop to standard 52 to 53 mm width. The slippage means the condom is loose, not that you need a different style of Magnum.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much bigger is Magnum than standard Trojan?
2 mm wider at the base (54 mm versus 52 mm) and contoured to widen further at the head. About 10 percent more material overall.
How much bigger is Magnum XL than standard Trojan?
About 30 percent more material by volume. 56 mm at the base, widens at the head, slightly longer.
Can I use Magnum if I am average-size?
Not recommended. Magnum on an average user can slip toward the tip during sex, risking slippage or coming off entirely. The protection benefit of a correctly fitted standard condom is much greater than a loose-fitting Magnum.
What is the difference between Magnum and Magnum Thin?
Size is the same. Latex thickness is different. Magnum is standard Trojan latex thickness; Magnum Thin is significantly thinner for more sensation.
Is there a non-latex Magnum?
Not from Trojan. For non-latex large-fit, LifeStyles SKYN Large (LifeStyles SKYN Large 12-pack) is the equivalent in polyisoprene.
