Condom Sizes Explained + How to Measure

Condom Sizes Explained + How to Measure

Condoms come in three general size categories: snug (49 to 51 mm nominal width), standard (52 to 54 mm), and large (54 to 60 mm). Fit is determined primarily by nominal width, not length. A correctly sized condom should feel snug enough that it does not slip but loose enough that you can roll it to the base without resistance. This guide explains how to measure, how to read sizing on a condom label, and how to find your size in under five minutes.

The Three Measurements That Matter

Every condom label gives at least one measurement, and premium brands often give all three:

  • Nominal width is roughly half the circumference of the rolled-out condom when laid flat. This is the single most important number and the one to size by.
  • Length is how long the condom is when fully unrolled. Most condoms are 180 to 210 mm long, which fits the vast majority of users with room to spare.
  • Girth (circumference) is the measurement around the widest part of the rolled-out condom. Some brands publish this in addition to width.

Width is the dimension you need to get right. Length is forgiving (you do not have to unroll the condom all the way), but width determines whether the condom hugs without pinching.

How to Measure Yourself

You will need a flexible measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler. Measure when fully erect for accuracy. Two measurements matter:

  1. Circumference: Wrap the tape (or string) around the thickest part of your shaft, usually the middle. Record the measurement.
  2. Nominal width equivalent: Divide the circumference by 2. That number, in millimeters, is approximately the nominal width condom you need.
  3. Length: Measure from the base (where the shaft meets the body) to the tip. This determines whether you want a longer or shorter condom for comfort, though it does not affect safety.

Example: an erect circumference of 11 cm (110 mm) divided by 2 equals 55 mm nominal width, which puts you in large-condom territory like the Trojan Magnum range. A circumference of 10 cm (100 mm) equals 50 mm, which is at the snug end of standard.

Reading the Label

In the U.S., condom labels often say only "Magnum," "XL," or "snug" without giving the actual width. The numbers are usually on the package side panel in small print, or on the manufacturer's product page. Premium and import brands (Kimono, Okamoto, MyONE) are much better about publishing exact width and length.

For reference, here are the published widths of the most common lines (always check current packaging since manufacturers occasionally adjust):

  • Standard Trojan, Durex, LifeStyles, ONE: 52 to 53 mm nominal width.
  • Snug-fit lines (LifeStyles Snugger Fit, ONE Snugger Fit): 49 to 51 mm.
  • Trojan Magnum: 54 mm.
  • Trojan Magnum XL: 56 mm.
  • SKYN Large: 56 mm.
  • MyONE custom sizes: 49 to 64 mm in 10 widths.

Signs You Have the Wrong Size

Too tight

Red ring at the base after removal, condom feels like it is pinching, hard to roll down, breaks more than it should, loss of erection because the constriction is uncomfortable. Size up to a wider width.

Too loose

Condom slips toward the tip during sex, bunches at the base, comes off entirely on withdrawal, feels like it is not gripping. Size down to a narrower width.

Length issue

Extra latex bunched at the base is mostly aesthetic and does not affect safety. You can leave it rolled at the base. If the condom does not extend far enough to comfortably cover, look for a longer length variant.

What If You Are Between Sizes?

It happens often. If standard feels tight but Magnum slips, you are in the gap between standard and large. A few options:

  • Try ONE Legend (ONE Legend), which is sized slightly above standard at 53 mm nominal but with a more contoured shape that gives a wider midshaft fit.
  • Try the LELO HEX Respect XL, which is a true tweener size.
  • Try MyONE Custom Fit, which offers 10 widths in 1 mm increments to dial in the exact fit.
  • Try Magnum Thin (Trojan Magnum Thin 12-pack), which is the Magnum size but in thinner latex, giving a different feel than the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average condom size men buy?

Standard width (52 to 53 mm nominal). This fits most men comfortably. Surveys of actual penile dimensions (Veale et al., 2015) put average erect circumference at about 11.7 cm (117 mm), which works out to roughly 51 to 53 mm nominal width.

Are Magnum and XL the same size?

No. Magnum is 54 mm nominal width. Magnum XL is 56 mm. There is also a Magnum Thin at 54 mm, which is the standard Magnum width but in thinner latex. See Magnum & Large-Fit Condoms by Brand.

Does length matter at all?

Length matters for comfort, not for safety. If a condom is longer than you need, the extra latex just rolls up at the base. As long as the condom covers the head and most of the shaft, you are protected. Most condoms are 180 to 210 mm unrolled, which fits the overwhelming majority of users.

How can I tell my size without measuring?

If standard condoms have ever felt tight, left a red mark, or broken on you, size up. If they have ever slipped or come off, size down. If you have never had either problem with standard condoms, you are most likely in the standard range.

Are there different condom sizes for circumcised vs uncircumcised?

No. There are no condom lines specifically marketed for circumcision status. The same sizing rules apply.
